At And Everything Nice, we are more than just a small business.  Some of our products hold great sentimental value to us.  Customers who have purchased “Pop’s Aftershave” or “Nan’s Linen Closet” candles may have wondered about the black and white photos staring back at them from the label.  These images are of owner/operator Erica Norton’s maternal grandparents.  Their real-life love story trumps all of the best fictional Hollywood stories one could imagine, so we felt compared to share it with you . . .

There once was a young, fourteen-year-old girl; wild, ornery, and beautiful, who grew up in a rural farm town in Indiana.  One day, the young girl, while causing a scene in an attempt to embarrass one of her girlfriends, caught the eye of a boy the same age.  The mere presence of this boy shook the teenage girl to her core, and she proclaimed to her friend she would one day be his wife.  Soon after the incident, the boy phoned the home of her friend and asked to speak to the “pretty, dark-headed girl.”  He requested they meet at a school dance, to which the young girl excitedly agreed.  Unfortunately, her excitement quickly turned to heartbreak while at the dance.  The young man all but ignored the girl as he held the attention of several other young ladies that night.

Although time passed and both went their separate ways, the boy was never far from the girl’s thoughts.  While attending a local carnival a few years after the dance, she happened upon a psychic booth, which she visited just for fun.  The self-proclaimed psychic informed the girl she would marry a man with blonde hair and blue eyes.  In her vision, the psychic saw the man in a blue uniform of some sort.  At the time, the young girl had a boyfriend with dark hair and eyes.  However, her mind went straight to the young man she had met at fourteen, who by this time had joined the United States Air Force (and ironically was donning a blue military uniform).

Imagine the shock and surprise the girl must have felt when one day, out of the blue, she received a letter from the boy who was stationed far away.  She responded to his letter and this form of communication continued for several years.  While stationed in the country of Turkey, the man won a bit of money during a poker game and used the funds to purchase an engagement ring.  He shipped the ring home to his mama near Christmastime and wrote a letter requesting the woman visit his parents to open this special gift.  Her answer was an obvious "yes."  When his term was over in the military, he returned home to wed this beautiful woman.

They worked hard to create a wonderful life together from the ground up; building a family, a home, great friendships, and financial security.  The couple had three children and later, two grandchildren, who were the very center of their world from the time they were born, just as their own three were.  This couple stayed strong in their love and devotion to one another and to their family, no matter what life threw their way.

As the couple aged, their bodies and minds began to show signs of the inevitable.  Just as they had grown together as teenagers, they began to decline together in their final years here on earth.  In the sixty plus years of loving each other, they developed a bond so strong, nothing could break it.  So when the elderly woman was called Home to be with the Lord, it made heartbreaking sense that the elderly man would soon follow.  In the year 1938, these two admirable, loving people were sent from God to their earthly homes within a month of each other. In the year 2020, they returned to their eternal home within three months of each other.  Their love was so great, it went beyond the scope of an earthly relationship.

As you can imagine, it is extremely important to their surviving family members that their memory lives on.  One way to accomplish this was to create candle fragrances that mimic familiar scents connected to this couple, which led to the creation of "Pop's Aftershave" and "Nan's Linen Closet."  If you have purchased a product from our 'Sentimental Scent' collection, we hope you remember their story each time the fragrance fills your home.  In this fast-paced, somewhat pessimistic world, please let it serve as a reminder that old-fashioned values, true love, and genuine family bonds do still exist.
